The physical environment of Memory Care communities has always revolved around protecting dementia patients and their caregivers. This involves locked exit doors and extreme safety measures to ensure the residents are properly taken care of.
What we don’t think about, however, is that this is not putting the residents’ mental health at the top of the priority list. Locked doors and the inability to go outdoors at their leisure make the residents feel trapped in their space. There is a way to keep memory care residents safe while also putting their mental health at the top of mind.
